Lately, we’ve been covering the topic of the current economic climate and our place in it. While, in our last episode, we shifted topics to sports, I believe the lessons we took away can benefit the current economic climate. Namely, how we as leaders hire and retain talent in a pressured job market.

Jared Rice, executive director of The Players, recently joined us to discuss his PGA journey and marrying business with fandom. One thing that stuck out to me was his thoughts on hiring based on dependability!

When hiring, no one is looking for the next CEO or Director. They’re looking for the ones who raise their hands and show up! Dependability is one of the most essential qualities an employer must look for in a potential employee.

It is the foundation on which trust is built, and trust is essential in any workplace. It’s also how Jared brought the TPC Tournament from strength to strength.

So let’s explore how being dependable can help your employees (or even you) have a better career.

Being Dependable Leads to Increased Productivity

Consistency in work/output makes you more likely to complete your tasks efficiently and effectively. This means that employees can meet deadlines and consistently produce high-quality work.

In turn, this can lead to more opportunities for advancement and recognition, which can help you have a better career.

Being Dependable Leads to Increased Job Satisfaction

When you are reliable and consistent, your colleagues and supervisors are likelier to trust you, respect you, and appreciate your contributions. This can create a positive work environment and foster a sense of belonging, increasing job satisfaction.

When satisfied with your job, you are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and productive, enhancing career prospects.

It Can Help Build a Strong Professional Reputation

You demonstrate your reliability and professionalism when you consistently deliver high-quality work, meet deadlines, and follow through on commitments.

This can lead to increased respect and admiration from your colleagues and superiors and can also enhance your personal brand. As you build a solid professional reputation, you may attract more opportunities for career growth and advancement.

Being Dependable Can Help Develop Important Skills

While you may not be looking for the next CEO, that doesn’t mean the job can’t be a stepping stone. Dependability is the gateway that can enhance career prospects.

For example, dependability requires strong time management, communication, and organizational skills. When you develop these skills, you become a more valuable employee and can take on more challenging roles and responsibilities. Additionally, it produces a strong work ethic that further enhances career prospects.

Bottom Line

Being dependable is essential for having a better career. For employers, it’s critical to seek quality over quantity. It may take more time, but in the end, it will boost your retention and output.

Dependability increases your employees' productivity, job satisfaction, professional reputation, and skill set. By consistently delivering high-quality work and following through on commitments, you become a valuable asset to your team and enhance your career prospects. So, make dependability a priority in your hiring process, and you will reap the benefits.
